TAMIL NADU CANCER REGISTRY PROJECT (TNCRP):

Cancer Surveillance

  • Through TNCRP covers entire Tamil Nadu population of about 80 million as on date, the highest in the world by any cancer registry. Cancer statistics by 32 districts as per Census of Tamil Nadu 2011 classification is provided.
  • 69,517 new cancer cases were diagnosed in year 2017 in the whole of Tamil Nadu. The estimated new cancer burden is 81,814 in Tamil Nadu in year 2021.
  • There were more women with cancer than men in Tamil Nadu for all cancers put together (1.2:1).

Crude Incidence Rate

  • CIR of all cancers together was 87.9 per 100,000 population for both sexes together in Tamil Nadu state – Male: 79.2; Female: 96.6. The cumulative risk of acquiring cancer in one’s lifetime of 0-74 years was one in 11 in Tamil Nadu.
  • The highest CIR of all cancers and both sexes together was observed in Chennai (143.0) and the least was reported in Nilgiris (53.5) districts.

Cancers In Tamil Nadu

  • Common cancers among men in Tamil Nadu: Stomach (CIR:7.0), Lung (6.6), Mouth (6.6), Large bowel (5.6) and Tongue (4.6).
  • Common cancers among women in Tamil Nadu: Breast (CIR: 25.5), Cervix (18.7),
    Ovary (5.2), Large bowel (3.9) and Corpus uteri (3.7).

Age Standardized Rate

  • The age standardized rate (ASR) of female breast cancer observed in Chennai (44.6 per 100,000 women) was the second highest in India.
  • The incidence of cervix cancer observed in Dharmapuri district (ASR: 33.2 per 100,000 women) was the highest in India.
  • ASR of mouth cancer among women in Thanjavur district (6.9) is the second highest in India.
